MSP,MokkenScalingforPolytomousitems,offersscalingfacilitiesforthecumulativenonparametricitemresponsetheorydevelopedsince1971byMokkenandotherDutchresearchers.Measurementoflatentattributesoccursinallsocialandbehavioralsciences.Suchscalesareoftenusedtomeasurepropertieslikeacademicachievement,personalitytraitslikeextraversion,orpersonalattitudesaboutpolitical,moralorsocialissues,orapatient’sviewsonqualityoflife.Fromtheresponsesofpersonstoanumberofitemsorquestionsindicativeofthelatenttrait,scalescoresforthepersonsareobtainedandthequalityofthemeasurementinstrumentisevaluated.MSPisasimpleandflexibletoolforthistask,widelyapplicablebecauseitisbasedonmildstatisticalassumptions.Itcanbeused,forbothdichotomousandpolytomousdata,for:

Step1:DefineData
Afterthedesireddatafilehasbeenopened,ascreenappears,whichplaystheroleofaDefineDatadialoguebox.
Step2:SelectandRecode
Thisbuttonallowsonetoselectandpre-processthedatabeforetheanalyses.Aselectionofcasescanbemadebyspecifyingacriterion,suchasAgebelwo65.Also,theusermayselectasubsetoftheavailableitems.
Step3:InitialCalculations
Precedingtheactualscalingprocedure,theitemsteporder,thebivariatetablesandanumberofbasicmatricesarecalculated.TheStep3windowallowschangingthedefaultspecificationsforthesecalculations.
Step4:ScaleAnalysis
Thisstepisprobablythemostimportantone.Itenablestheusertospecifythedetailsforeachscaleanalysis.Onecanenterupto10analysisspecificationstobeexecutedoneaftertheother.
Step5:ViewResults
Theuserseesthenamesofthemanypartsintowhichtheoutputisdivided.Figure3presentsanexample.Therearenowseveraloptionstoview,(seeexampleinfig.4),printorsaveeitherpartsoftheoutputorthecompletereport(whichisusuallyquitevoluminous).Specialbuttonsallowreturningtostep2orstep4,inordertorestarttheanalysisfromthesameinitialsettingwithasmallmodification.
